June is a key month for high school basketball. Across the country, teams spend the month together in gyms, offering an early look at what next season may bring. They take part in joint practices, summer play dates, summer leagues and collegiate team camps throughout June. The highlight of the month, though, are the three weekends known as the “Live Period,” when college coaches fill gyms to scout and evaluate the next wave of high school talent.
Florida takes center stage this year as more than 100 boys’ and girls’ teams from across the state gather at the Alachua County Sports & Event Center in Gainesville for the 2026 FABC Conrad P. Foss Live Period Scholastic Showcase. In accordance with NCAA guidelines, the event will feature two boys’ sessions, June 12th–14th and June 26th–28th, and one girls’ session, June 18th–20th.
Recruiting continues to change as new factors reshape the landscape. The Live Period gives athletes, regardless of recruiting rankings and travel ball backgrounds, a valuable chance to showcase their skills with their high school teams in front of college coaches from all levels.
“When [college coaches] attend events such as these, we are looking to see how a player impacts the game and how that translates to impacting the game at our level,” stated a current Division-I assistant coach, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “Obviously coaches have a pre-determined list of players that they are there to see, however, an event like this allows us to see more players that could fit what we are looking for. Coaches have found players for the first time at these events, so these events remain important in recruiting.”
The FABC Live Period will feature high school coaches from all levels of experience that continue to seek ways to enhance their program and players.
Matt Anderson has more than 25 years of high school head coaching experience in Florida. He guided Milton to a 24-4 record in his first season last year, and as he enters his second year with the Panthers, he views June as a vital month for his program.
“We’re super excited. This event gives us the opportunity to face high-level competition and teams with different styles than we do not see in our area,” Anderson said. “June—especially during the Live Period—is extremely important for us. It helps our team bond, gives us a chance to learn more about our younger players, and shows us who is developing leadership qualities. It also puts our players in front of college coaches. We make sure our kids know those coaches are there, and if a coach shows interest, we do everything we can to provide whatever they need—our schedule, film, anything—because that’s the value of playing in Live Period events.”
